150 year anniversary for Vienna's Ringstrasse

Emperor Franz Joseph officially opened  Vienna's Ringstrasse on May 1, 1865. Numerous events will be taking place to celebrate its 150th birthday in 2015.

The construction of Vienna's Ringstrasse was an urban design masterpiece. It took over 50 years for the 5.3km long boulevard with its newly created representational buildings, diverse museums, beautiful parks and music theatres to be completed in lieu of the unnecessary city fortifications and so connect the centre of imperial power in the heart of the city with the bourgeois suburbs of Vienna.

Completed, the Ringstrasse fulfilled different purposes - and still does to this day: it is an important traffic artery, a boulevard and promenade, a place to meet, a shopping street and a witness of historical events. Even today, many events take place on Vienna's most famous street - from the Rainbow Parade to the Vienna City Marathon.

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Vienna's Ringstrasse numerous anniversary exhibitions and special interest tours take place throughout the year. More Information at http://www.wien.info/en/sightseeing/ringstrasse2015 .
